Here Come The Waves

Whatever floats my boat...

Come on in and make yourself comfortable. The paths I follow sometimes tend to be non-linear and diverge into other altogether different places. I'm still not sure if this is a pop culture blog with art, or a historical one with nature or really what it is. In my mind it somehow works. I will tell you however that I do hate the dull, predictable, and the common...and if we share that as a common ground, then we'll have some fun.

That being said, many of these posts are photos that I have acquired over the years. When possible I will post credits or re-blog them if from another point of origin. If there is something of yours that needs to be credited or removed, I will be happy to do so if it is your creation or copyright. Otherwise, please just let me spread the love.

I am also a guest blogger on the super "Fuck Yeah Lou Reed" page here on tumblr. There I'll be putting up the odd live/rare/unheard Lou tracks, as well as whatever cool photos-videos-and of course anecdotes that I may have. So do come on by.

It really is very beautiful!  Iggy is so great!

I met Iggy a number of times during my early days in NYC in the early 90’s. He lived a block away from a cafe I worked at, and would come in quite often. He was always very cool and very friendly. It seems underneath his well known exterior, was a quite caring, human and intelligent guy. A mid-western warmth that shone through. I remember a waitress I worked with, who is a wonderful soul and a dear friend, wrote him a similar note. In it she recounted years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of her father, a mother in denial, and a brother who was her anchor throughout all this. He was a punk rock drummer who loved Iggy’s records. Together they would play those records when the parents were gone. Songs of desperation and freedom gave them a safe place and emotional armor in the midst of a ton of pain. It helped them to cope, and gave them a place to be kids and best friends in a window of time. Sadly he was schizophrenic and died in his sleep at 18. She told him that seeing him come in always brightened her day. He brought back all the good memories of her brother from a time so limited in good feelings. The day she gave him that note, she didn’t really expect to hear back from him. When he came in at 5, and told her how much it meant to him, he gave her the strongest, most intense hug. There were tears in his eyes. In ours too. He made her feel like a million dollars. Very classy.

Iggy and “Handsome” Dick Manitoba 1973. If you’re ever in NYC and you want to hear some real rock and roll, then check out Manitoba’s Bar on Ave.B and 6th Street. In a NYC that is getting richer & lamer by the minute, it’s one of the last breaths of old skool cool to be found in (the former) alphabet city. And yeah, there is a good chance you’ll see Dick there, running the show.
